Fillmore Elementary Collects Non-Food Items

Fillmore Elementary Collects Non-Food Items

The Fillmore Elementary fifth grade collected non-food items for the Putnam County Non-Food Pantry hosted by St. Andrew’s Church. In lieu of doing a gift exchange in their classroom, the boys and girls in Mrs. McCammack’s class demonstrated the true meaning of the Christmas spirit by bringing in items for others in need. Anyone needing assistance can visit St. Andrew’s Church on the last Saturday of each month from 12 noon until 3:00 ...

Sermon: One Epiphany January 8, 2012

Sermon: One Epiphany January 8, 2012

Water. We need water – more than we need food- to live. Up to 60% of our bodies are water. Dehydration is one of the most difficult challenges we face- and one reason our doctors suggest we drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. We need water to flush our bodies of toxins. Without water, we literally wither – and ultimately die. Water makes the difference between life and death.

We have images of water and its importance as ...

Sermon: Holy Name January 1, 2012

Sermon: Holy Name January 1, 2012

The Lord bless you and keep you. God to Moses to Aaron to the people of Israel. A belief that to see God directly was to die- that knowing or seeing  God face-to-face was too overwhelming for mere humans. And so the intermediary structure is put in place. Moses is the one who has seen God and  lived- but not so for others. And when Moses had seen God, a veil was placed over his face so that the brilliance of ...

Sermon Christmas Day 2011

Sermon Christmas Day 2011

Golden-tongued. What a nickname!

John Chrysostom – one of the early church fathers- was called this because his preaching was so eloquent.

Christianity was the state religion by this time in parts of the world.

Christians who could read and write and speak well were rising to positions of power within the Roman Empire.

One of the reasons I find him interesting is that he spoke out against the abuse ...

Sermon Christmas Eve 2011 (Christmas One readings)

Let us pray: Emanuel. Emanuel. Tonight you come to us, clothed in human flesh. Give us grace and courage to reach out to you. To accept all that  you offer to us. May our lives be transformed by your love. Lead us to witness to the good news this day and for ever more. Amen.

There is a saying appropriate for today: “What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others lives on forever.”[1] All of ...

Sermon December 4 2011 Two Advent and Celebration of St. Andrew’s Day

Handel’s oratorio, The Messiah, is often offered at this time of year. To me, it is one of the greatest pieces of music. It tells the story of the coming of the Christ child through Scripture and music. The more of our senses that are engaged in an activity, the deeper the message goes. How many of us have sung, some quietly and some at the top of our lungs, “halleluiah, halleluiah…” and stood when that chorus is sung in ...
