Tuesday in the First Week of Advent

Here is another Advent reflection from Deb Beck.

“The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence. When mindfulness embraces

those we love, they will bloom like flowers.” -Thich Nhat Hanh

First Week of Advent: HOPE

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

It would be trite and unoriginal to remind everyone how easy it is this time of year

to be entrapped by all the rush and busy-ness of the season. No one needs reminding.

It’s easy to say, “Stop. Focus. Take time for yourself. Take a few minutes to reflect.” It’s

harder to actually do it. I propose it’s harder still, and yet more important, to take it one

step further.

Yes, one should definitely try and focus on doing the things which are important,

and not neglect them for those which are most pressing. But to actually be present; that

seems to me the hard part. It seems the biggest challenge is in tuning in to ourselves and

those around us; really hearing and connecting with our children, co-workers, the cashier,

that person passed in the hall, ourselves. A goal for today might simply be to be open and

present.

Prayer for Today:

Lord, I confess to myself, which is to confess to you, that I am far too outwardly focused. I

am missing out on so many opportunities to live in You. Help me to be open, and mindful

of all those I encounter today. Help me to be present to myself. Allow me to offer others

something nourishing, that they may bloom a little.
