Ten years ago we were anticipating the birth of our first grandchild who was born on Christmas day. We all wait with hopeful and sometimes fearful anticipation for the birth of a new baby. Perhaps it is in part because we know that a baby will bring change into our lives in a way that nothing else can. Welcoming a new child into our family or community means we embrace the change in our lives that baby’s presence will bring.
Maybe God chose to send his Son in the form of a helpless infant instead of a powerful messiah king many were expecting because the birth of an infant would change the everyday lives of humankind in the way no powerful king ever could.
This Advent I pray that my heart will be open to welcome the birth of God’s son and open to the change that birth we celebrate at Christmas will bring in my own life.
